Uniqlo “to be bigger than Spain’s Inditex” as brand debuts in Barcelona


As Japan casualwear retail giant Uniqlo opened its first store in Barcelona, president Tadashi Yanai told El País his plan is to be bigger than Inditex, particularly targeting the group’s star Zara brand.

However, he noted its 2020 target for equalling Inditex in size “could be difficult, and perhaps we won’t achieve it [by then], but my dream is to be bigger than Inditex in the future. It doesn’t matter how long it takes.”

Tadashi Yanai also told the newspaper a big target was to boost its internet results: “Online sales currently represent 5-6% of sales, but we want to grow this to 30% as quickly as possible. I think that to buy clothes you have to touch them and test their quality, but we need both channels – online sales and physical stores,” he noted.

He added that Uniqlo “doesn’t compete on price: we do it with truly innovative clothing…. We want to compete in terms of quality and the products we offer. High quality at affordable prices.”
