Fashion flies as John Lewis sales jump online, in-store for latest week

Another good week for John Lewis, particularly in fashion, as the UK department store group saw total sales in the seven days to July 22 rise 8.9% to £79.8m. Both online and physical stores enjoyed strong sales, with online traffic “seeing one of its biggest weeks of the year,” noted Sienne Veit, director of Online Product.

Fashion sales for the week jumped 15.5% on-year with womenswear leading the way, leaping 34.5%, with its own-label denim lifestyle brand, AND/OR, “a stand out”.

Elsewhere, beauty, wellbeing and leisure also had a good week with sales up 13.4%, “driven by strength at our beauty counters,” said Veit.

Home sales rose 11%, with textiles and home accessories enjoying the strongest week, up 16.3%. Furniture and flooring also saw a good week of sales growth, up 8.4%.

EHT (electricals) sales were up 2.1% for the week. Tablets and computers enjoyed a particularly strong week, up 23%, driven by sales of the MacBook Air and 10-inch iPads. Sales within vision also saw double digit growth, driven by the launch of the new Samsung chrome TV.
