Dior, Nike and Inditex world's largest apparel companies

Parisian fashion house Christian Dior, US sporting goods behemoth Nike, and Spanish clothing giant Inditex have all topped Forbes' 2017 The World's Biggest Public Companies ranking.

Its annual list is not surprisingly dominated by major banks and investment services overall – led by China's ICBC in the number one slot. But plenty of clothing brands and retailers also made the cut.

Luxury firm Christian Dior took the apparel top spot, at number 189 on the overall list with a market value listed at $42.7bn, US$43.7bn in sales, $2bn in profit and $68.3bn in assets.

Athletic and footwear giant Nike, at number 249 overall, came in second with its market value of $91.2bn, $33.8bn in sales, $4.1bn in profit and $23.2bn in assets. The company had a clear lead over German rival Adidas which was ranked at number 468 overall with market value of $39.6bn, sales of $29.3bn, profits of $1.1bn, and assets listed at $16bn.

Inditex, the parent company of high street heavyweight Zara, comes in third for apparel and at number 276 in the overall ranking, valued at US$122.1bn, with sales of $25.7bn. The company's profits are listed at $3.5bn and its assets at $21.2bn.

Meanwhile, TJX was ranked at number 401 overall, with its market value list at $49.1bn; French luxury goods group Kering was at number 471 with market value of $33.7bn; Swedish retailer H&M came in at number 506 overall, with value listed at $39.9bn; Japan's Fast Retailing at number 677 with $31.8bn market value; VF Corp at number 728 listed at $22.5bn; Victoria's Secret owner L Brands at number 828 listed at $13.5bn; speciality retailer Gap Inc at number 998 overall with its market value of $9.6bn; and apparel giant PVH Corp at number 1213 with market value of $8bn.
