Primark continues US expansion with third store

Primark has now opened its third store in the US

British value fashion retailer Primark has opened its third US store in the north east of the country as the fashion retail giant looks to build its presence stateside.

The opening at the Danbury Fair Mall in in Danbury, Connecticut follows the first two openings in September last year, in Boston and Pennsylvania. Primark has plans to open around 11 stores in the US by the end of the year. The next six will be located in Pennsylvania, Staten Island, two in New Jersey, and two in Massachusetts.

"Following our two US store openings at Downtown Crossing Boston and King of Prussia Pennsylvania, we are delighted that Connecticut is the location of our third store," said Paul Marchant, Primark chief executive.

"We continue to receive extremely positive customer feedback and the opening of our third store at Danbury Fair Mall marks another important step in presenting the Primark brand to US consumers and raising awareness of our unique formula of 'Amazing Fashion, Amazing Prices'."

The new store offers a "trend room", 65 fitting rooms, 47 cash registers, access to free wi-fi and two customer "recharge" seating areas. The opening has also created around 220 jobs in the community.

Earlier this year, Paul Lister, responsible for Primark's ethical trading team, told just-style the company was still learning in the US and said its foray into the country's cut-throat retail market could lead to a slight shift in its sourcing strategy.

How Primark balances ethics and ultra-low prices

"It may mean that we look closer to America for some of our lines that we would otherwise look to Turkey and Eastern Europe for. But you need scale to do that. We're going in with what we know and then we'll learn, just as we did with our other markets."
